A wingless experimental lifting body: 1:72 Northrop M2-F3 from AMP is a kit of the legendary research machine that prepared the way for the Space Shuttle.
Responsibility details are not available.
The AMP brand has prepared a model of one of the strangest machines ever to fly. The M2-F3 has no wings in the usual sense of the word: the lift is created by the shaped body itself. The set comes from a new tooling and, besides the plastic parts, a photo-etched sheet and printed accessories for the cockpit belong to it.
The lifting body program was looking for a shape that could return from space and land without engine power. The M2-F2 machine was badly damaged on touchdown in 1967 and the footage of that accident later became widely known through television. Northrop rebuilt the fuselage and added a third, central vertical surface, and the result was the M2-F3 with markedly better stability. A B-52 bomber carried it aloft, after release it accelerated on a rocket engine and it passed both the speed of sound and the twenty kilometer mark. The experience from those flights fed into the design of later space gliders.
The model is small but demanding in shape: the smooth surfaces of the body will not tolerate scratches, so sand finely and gradually. The light upper finish calls for a carefully prepared surface, or the joints will show through. Bend the photo-etched parts on a metal surface and glue them at spots, so that the engraving does not get clogged.
It is a classic kit to be built: the parts are separated from the sprue gates, cleaned up and finally sprayed. The manufacturer supplies neither chemicals nor tools.
