About product

Seafire Mk.XV 1:72, Sword

An injection-molded plastic kit of the British Supermarine Seafire Mk.XV carrier fighter in 1:72 scale from the Czech maker Sword. Sword is a classic short-run brand: the molds give fine surface detail and interesting, rarely modeled versions, but the parts have thicker sprue gates and the fit has to be fine-tuned by hand. We therefore recommend the kit to more experienced modelers. The particular contents of the package differ between individual boxes, so go by the contents of your own.

The real subject

The Seafire was the naval, carrier adaptation of the legendary Spitfire: it received an arrestor hook, a strengthened structure and, on the later versions, folding wings as well, so that it could operate from the carriers of the Royal Navy. The Mk.XV version represents a generational leap, as it left the Merlin V12 behind and for the first time on a Seafire fitted the more powerful Rolls-Royce Griffon. That brought higher performance but also a longer, more humped nose, greater torque on takeoff and the opposite direction of propeller rotation, which pilots had to get used to. The Mk.XV came about at the end of the Second World War and practically never saw combat; in Royal Navy service, though, it served in the postwar years and became the basis for the following Griffon-engined Seafire versions.

Building and painting tips

Count on the procedure typical of short run: clean the parts of sprue gates, level the edges and dry-fit everything, ideally with the help of adhesive tape. Assemble and paint the cockpit before joining the fuselage; the fuselage joints and the wing roots will most likely want a little filler and sanding, after which it is worth gently restoring the surface detail. Mask the clear canopy with tape or masks. Apply a primer before painting, which will also reveal flaws in the joints. Typical British naval schemes work with the shades Extra Dark Sea Grey and Sky, or a postwar dark blue. Lay a gloss coat before the decals and a flat one after them; a fine wash on the panel lines and discreet wear at the wing root will give the model life.

Who the model is for

  • More experienced modelers with experience of short-run kits
  • Collectors of British naval aviation and of the Spitfire and Seafire family
  • Those interested in the rarer Griffon-engined versions
  • Modelers building Royal Navy carrier aircraft in 1:72

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

The Seafire is the carrier adaptation of the Spitfire for operation from aircraft carriers. It has an arrestor hook, a strengthened structure and, on the later versions, folding wings.

Short run means a smaller series of molds: the parts have thicker sprue gates and the fit is tuned by hand, including filling and sanding. For a complete beginner it is not the ideal first model.

It was the first version of the Seafire with a Rolls-Royce Griffon engine instead of the Merlin. It brought higher performance, a longer nose and different takeoff behavior.
