About product

Photo-etched set 1:72 Sikorsky CH-54A (Eduard, for ICM kits)

This is not a kit of the helicopter but a detail set for a model already bought. According to the manufacturer's instructions it contains two frets: one color-printed (instrument panels, consoles, seat belts, glued straight on with no painting) and one bare brass one with structural and external details. Cut for the ICM kit in 1:72 scale.

Careful not to confuse it: for the same helicopter and the same kit there is also a set of masks, which only covers the glazing during spraying and adds no parts. This photo-etched set, by contrast, adds parts and contains no masks. They complement each other but do not replace each other.

What the photo-etched parts are good for

Injection-molded plastic cannot be arbitrarily thin, as the mold could not be opened. Plates, grilles, brackets or seat belts therefore look like thick rectangles in plastic. Etched parts are physically thin metal and in 1:72 scale the difference shows at once. Color-printed instruments also solve the hardest part, the dials, which would be very difficult to paint by hand.

The real subject

The Sikorsky CH-54 Tarhe, known by the nickname Skycrane, is an American heavy crane helicopter, a skeleton with no conventional fuselage, under which a load is slung. In Vietnam it carried equipment and recovered downed machines. Its heavily glazed cabin is clearly visible on a model, which is exactly why an interior fret pays off.

Building tips

Metal is not glued with cement for polystyrene, which has no effect on it. Use cyanoacrylate glue (super glue), and for larger parts rather a two-part epoxy. The plastic moldings that the etched parts replace have to be sanded away, and that wet: sanding dust is harmful to health. Wash the bare etched parts in warm water with detergent before spraying, as degreased metal holds a primer incomparably better.

Who the set is for

  • For modelers who build the CH-54A from ICM in 1:72 scale.
  • For those who find the interior from the kit too empty under the glazed cabin.
  • For the moderately advanced, as work with etched parts wants tweezers and patience.
  • For a competition build with no resin.

A photo-etched set is not a kit. It contains no plastic parts, paints or glue, and the base model has to be bought separately.

FAQ

It is not. It is a set of photo-etched metal details for a CH-54A kit from ICM in 1:72 scale already bought. The model itself is not in the package.

The set of masks only covers the glazing during spraying and adds no parts. This set, by contrast, adds metal details of the interior and the exterior and contains no masks. They are two different products and they complement each other.

Never with cement for plastic, which has no effect on metal. Use cyanoacrylate glue (super glue), and a two-part epoxy for larger parts.

No. The color-printed parts, such as the instrument panels and the seat belts, are glued straight on. The bare brass fret is washed before painting and sprayed with a primer.
