An injection-molded plastic kit of the British Supermarine Spitfire Mk.Vb fighter in its late production version, 1:72 scale, made by Kovozavody Prostejov (KP). KP-JOYPACK is a simplified, stripped-down edition and not a package of several models. For it the manufacturer states one sprue of plastic parts including the canopy, with no decal sheet and no printed instructions; the assembly instructions can be downloaded from the manufacturer. It is therefore a straightforward way to add another Spitfire to a collection for a modeler who supplies the markings himself.
The Spitfire Mk.V was the most numerously built version of the Spitfire and in 1941 and 1942 it formed the backbone of RAF Fighter Command. It was powered by a Rolls-Royce Merlin engine of the 45/50 series with a single-stage supercharger. The designation Vb means the type B wing, that is a combination of two 20 mm Hispano cannons and four .303 machine guns. The late machines differ from the early ones in details of the airframe and equipment: typical are the bulkier dust filter under the nose on aircraft destined for the Mediterranean and North Africa, clipped wingtips that improved agility at low altitude, and a later form of exhausts. The Mk.V fought over the Channel, over Malta and in North Africa, and Czechoslovak fighter pilots flew it as well.
Glue with a thin cement for plastic and start with the cockpit interior; in 1:72 a seat, a panel and belts are enough, but they have to be painted before the fuselage is closed. Fill and sand the seams between the fuselage halves and along the wing leading edge, and watch out for the fine panel lines. Glue the clear parts with a cement for canopies, mask them with tape and spray only after a coat of primer. Check carefully in the instructions which variant of wingtips and which type of air filter your machine has, because these are exactly the details that make a Mk.Vb into a particular aircraft and they are the most common source of mistakes. RAF machines carry a two-color upper camouflage with a light underside; apply a gloss coat under the decals and unify the finished model with a matte one. The JOYPACK edition comes without decals, so plan the markings from your own stock.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
