Supermarine Spitfire Mk.Vc and F-35B Lightning II in 1:72 scale from Airfix - a pair of British fighter aircraft separated by some eighty years of development in aviation technology.

This set from the British brand Airfix places side by side two aircraft from opposite ends of the history of jet and piston fighter technology. They are classic injection-molded plastic models in 1:72 scale, that is, in the most widespread aviation scale of all - built examples fit easily into an existing collection and do not take up much room in a display case.
The Supermarine Spitfire Mk.Vc was among the most numerously built versions of the Spitfire in the middle phase of the war. It was powered by the liquid-cooled Rolls-Royce Merlin V12, and the letter c in the designation denotes the so-called universal wing, which allowed various combinations of machine-gun and cannon armament to be fitted. Besides the British Isles the type served in the Mediterranean and in North Africa.
The F-35B Lightning II, by contrast, is a contemporary single-engined combat aircraft in the version for short take-off and vertical landing. A lift fan driven by a shaft from the main engine and a swiveling nozzle allow it to operate from short strips and from the decks of ships without a catapult. The shaping of the airframe is subordinated to a low radar signature, which on a model shows in angular transitions and in surfaces free of needless protrusions.
Glue both models with thin cement for polystyrene, which is drawn into a joint by capillary action and leaves no fingerprints. Before painting, spray the parts with filler primer - it will reveal small scratches left by sanding and even out how absorbent the surface is. The Spitfire takes a more pronounced emphasis of the panel lines; on the F-35B, by contrast, work sparingly, because the modern finish is matte and low in contrast, and overdone emphasis of the joints looks unconvincing on it. Mask the clear cockpit parts before spraying and apply the decals onto a glossy surface, so that they do not pucker.
The models are supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
