Swedish leather guns of the Thirty Years' War in 1:72 scale. Light pieces that the soldiers pulled themselves and that moved directly with the infantry, crew included.

The leather gun came about in Swedish service in the 1620s as an attempt to get fire support where heavy pieces could not reach. A thin-walled metal tube was wound with rope and mastic and finally with a leather sheath, from which the weapon took its name. The result weighed a fraction of an ordinary gun, and two men or one horse could pull it.
That changed the whole relationship between the gunners and the foot soldiers. The piece did not stay back in a battery but advanced at the side of the formation, fired at close range and moved on after the volley. The crew was made up of two or three people with drag ropes, who had to keep pace with the marching line. The weak point remained the overheating of the sheath, and that is why the Swedes soon replaced the leather pieces with a cast three-pounder gun, which stood up to longer firing.
The set tells a story of movement, not of firing. Set one piece at an angle, as though the crew had just dragged it to a new place, and leave the other one fired, with a man springing away from the recoil. The tension comes from the difference between the two groups; if you add a block of pikemen or musketeers to them, the scene gains the right sense of scale for the period.
The leather sheath darkens into brown with an uneven sheen, and the rope winding comes out with a dry brush. Leave the blue and yellow elements of the equipment rather faded, as campaigning in the field bleached clothing quickly. Give the men at the ropes glossier leather on their belts, while leaving the linen breeches entirely flat; the contrast of materials keeps a small figure legible even from a distance.
