Xpress Color is a line in which the shade works for you. It is applied in one coat over a light ground and as it dries it draws into the hollows: there it settles saturated, whereas on the raised areas it stays thin and translucent. The resulting tone is therefore not flat but graded from a deep core to a light crest.
In a set of this scope whole families are represented: pale bone and sand tones for cloth and horn, warm yellows and oranges, reds both cool and brick, blues from sky to midnight, greens from grass to dark pine, browns from coffee to cinnamon, and the grays with black that close it off. Neighboring bottles as a rule differ not only in lightness but in temperature too: a red with a blue cast stands next to a red leaning toward orange, because each suits a different surface.
It does its best service on a broken-up surface: on the gathers of a cloak, on scales, on chainmail, on fur. On a large smooth area the drawing has nowhere to show, and so it is more sensible to lay an opaque tone there and add the saturating coat only over it. The lightness of the ground changes the result considerably more than it does with ordinary opaque acrylics: over white the tone comes out clean and bright, over gray it darkens and is damped into a faded position.
The closable case holds the bottles together and a shade is looked up in it by family rather than by the number on the label.
