A coarse gravel grit in a brown shade for the track ballast of well-used lines, industrial spurs and gravel roads. The bag holds 353 cm³ of loose material, which is applied dry and fixed with thinned glue.

A stone bed is not between the ties for the sake of appearance. It holds the track in alignment, spreads the pressure of the axles into the embankment and above all leads water away so that the subgrade does not turn to mush. Freshly poured grit is therefore sharp and light, only service transforms it over a few years: rust from brake shoes, dust from bulk loads and crushed material from load spaces gradually recolor it into warm brown tones. That is how an industrial spur to a sugar refinery looks, or a forest line, or a siding where freight wagons have been loaded in the same place for decades.
The fraction in this package is the coarsest of the three grades the manufacturer offers in the range of grits. Converted to a large scale it corresponds to real stone with an edge of around five to seven centimeters, so on a garden railroad or in gauge one size it serves directly as a bed. In smaller scales it tends to be better to use it somewhere other than under the ties: on a heap by a quarry, on the fill around a retaining wall, on a stony field road or as rubble under a rock slope.
The material is natural stone, not colored plastic, so it will also take paint and further weathering with a pigment. It is poured dry, smoothed with a soft brush and only then dripped over with water and a drop of dish soap and fixed with thinned PVA glue. Anyone who drips the glue on before the surface is level will get lumps that can no longer be pushed apart.
The bag can be closed again after pouring out, so the remainder will wait for the next section of line. Before you set about a whole layout, it pays to pour a trial meter: the profile of a bed has a level surface at the top between the ties, at the sides it falls away at a gentle angle and at its foot it dissolves into the terrain. It is precisely that lower transition that makes the greatest difference in a photograph between a finished line and an ordinary pile of stones.
