The brown of modern Japanese vehicles

The shade listed as Brown JGSDF belongs to the colors of the Japan Ground Self-Defense Force. Their vehicles wear a two-color camouflage made up of a dark green and precisely this brown, which breaks it up into irregular fields. The scheme is fairly high in contrast, and on a model it has a great deal of influence on how the vehicle reads: brown areas that are too narrow turn the scheme into blotches, while ones that are too wide overpower the green.

How to apply the scheme

The proven procedure is to spray the green base over the whole vehicle first and to lay the brown over it according to a plan. On the real vehicles the boundaries of the fields are fairly definite, so spray close in with a fine line; in larger scales masking putty or tape laid loosely on the surface will help. The scheme carries over onto small parts such as containers, racks and headlights as well, otherwise the vehicle looks as if it had been stickered.

Painting tips

• Stir the bottle thoroughly before use, as brown pigments settle quickly.
• Thin it with the thinner of the same range and apply thin coats; a crisp boundary forms better over a dry surface.
• A brush will manage smaller areas, but the transition between colors comes out more evenly when sprayed.
• Sketch the camouflage fields lightly in pencil or prepare a plan, as corrections once the paint is dry are laborious.
• Let a gloss intermediate coat dry in place before applying the decals.
