About product

Vallejo Model Color Burnt Umber (17 ml)

Burnt Umber is a classic artists' pigment with several centuries of history in painting - and it passed into modeling for the same reason painters used it: it is a dark, deep earthy brown that can shade without dirtying an area down to gray. The shade comes from the Model Color line by Vallejo and it is a water-thinnable acrylic - thinned with water or an acrylic thinner, never with a lacquer or synthetic thinner. The Model Color line is developed for brush application; it can be laid down with an airbrush, but only after thinning - unlike the Model Air line, which can be sprayed straight from the bottle. It comes in a 17 ml dropper bottle. Note: it is neither a metallic nor a ready-made wash - it is an opaque acrylic paint.

What burnt umber is good for

Burnt Umber is among the most used shading shades there is and few palettes do without it. It is a classic paint for shading wood, leather and earth: thinned into a glaze it flows beautifully into recesses and engraved lines, and unthinned it serves as a dark undertone beneath lighter brown and ocher shades. It comes into its own in making washes and glazes, for patina and for aging surfaces, on wooden parts, leather straps and satchels, on mud and deposits of earth on chassis and in dioramas. It also mixes well - a drop of burnt umber will darken and settle down practically any shade that is too raw.

Use

  • Shading and glazes on wood, leather and earth
  • A base for washes and your own flowing mixtures
  • A dark undertone beneath lighter brown and ocher shades
  • Patina, aging of surfaces, mud and deposits on chassis
  • Muting and darkening shades that are too raw when mixing
  • An earthy base in dioramas and on figure bases

Who the paint is for

For figure painters, diorama builders and modelers of military vehicles - that is, for everyone who shades, weathers and mixes their own earthy shades. Thanks to its versatility it is one of the paints worth keeping permanently in a modeling kit. A water-thinnable acrylic with a low odor is suitable for work in an apartment and for beginners as well.

When spraying with an airbrush ensure enough ventilation and protect your airways with a respirator. Keep out of the reach of children.

FAQ

No. It is an opaque acrylic paint, not a ready-made flowing wash. You can easily mix a wash from it, though - just thin it with water or an acrylic thinner into a glaze that will run into recesses and engraved lines.

For shading and glazing wood, leather and earth, for dark undertones beneath lighter browns, for patina and mud on chassis and in dioramas. It is also used to mute and darken shades that are too raw when mixing.

Yes, but only after thinning. Model Color is the thicker line developed for the brush. Paints ready for spraying straight from the bottle without thinning come rather from the Model Air line.
