A carmine red from the Model Color range by Vallejo. It is a modeling paint, not a kit - the package consists of a single dropper bottle with a volume of 17 ml. Model Color is a water-thinnable acrylic with a high pigment concentration and a flat finish, developed above all for brush application. It can be used in an airbrush, but it has to be thinned to the consistency of milk. That is how it differs from the Model Air range, which is thinner and ready to spray straight away - so watch which range you want when you buy.
Carmine is a historical pigment and the shade matches: it is a darker red leaning toward violet and blue, deeper and nobler than a bright signal red. If you are looking for a pure, bright red for racing finishes or fire service vehicles, reach instead for the shade Red (70.926) from the same range. Carmine Red is its darker counterpart - and that is exactly why a bright red shades beautifully into depth with it.
Red pigments generally have poor covering power and carmine is no exception. Over a dark base it comes out dirty and dull. Apply it therefore over a white or light gray base and build the shade up in two or three thin coats instead of one heavy one - that would flood the detail and dry unevenly.
For figure painters and modelers of historical vehicles who work with a brush and need a deep, period-looking red - and for anyone who wants to mix and shade their reds themselves.
