Mars Red in the finest fraction is the color of weathered iron in soil: the laterite of the tropics, Spanish and Italian fields, African dusty tracks and the parched plains of the Middle East. The grain of 0.2 to 0.6 mm lies on the boundary between a scatter and a pigment, so it behaves half as a terrain material and half as a powder that clings to parts and stays in corners.
On terrain it is applied through a sieve onto thinned glue and once dry it forms a continuous velvety surface without visible particles. The second path leads over the model: a pinch taken up with a soft brush is spread over the undercarriage, over the mudguards and around the steps, where real soil holds longest. It is fixed by a light spray of matte varnish from a distance, never from close up, otherwise the stream of air will blow the dust away before the varnish catches it.
A rusty tone works best when it is not alone. Add a darker earth into the shadows and a lighter ocher to the raised places instead; spread the transition with a clean brush. A smaller amount is also enough to suggest the dust stirred up behind a moving vehicle, where the material is applied from the wheels upward and weakens away from the machine.
A grain of this caliber spreads around a workshop by itself. Work over a tray, open the container away from a finished model and close it after every dose; otherwise you will find a red cast even where it does not belong. Take it up with a flat scoop rather than pouring straight from the container; a dose can then be measured out in small amounts and the rest stays undisturbed.
Under such a fine layer the color of the terrain shows through, so paint the base in a related tone. On a white base the shade comes out cold and the area looks powdered.
