A publication from the Duke Hawkins range devoted to the Sukhoi Su-22 Fitter combat aircraft. Reference for modelers who want to settle the version, the armament and the finish of their model.
Responsibility details are not available.
The Su-22 is the export designation of the Soviet fighter bomber of the Su-17 family, to which NATO assigned the code name Fitter. The design grew out of the older Su-7, whose outer wing panels received variable geometry. The swing wing shortened the takeoff and landing run while leaving the aircraft its speed at low altitude. It is a single-engined machine with a crew of one pilot, meant above all for attacks on ground targets. In a number of versions the Fitter reached the air forces of the whole of the former Eastern Europe, including Czechoslovakia. Alongside the single-seat combat machines, two-seat training versions were built as well, recognizable by their lengthened cockpit and raised fuselage spine.
The Su-22 differs from one machine to the next. Individual users rebuilt the machines and changed the armament under the wing, the drop tanks and the color schemes, so two aircraft of the same version can look different. A publication focused on a single type gives the context that does not fit into a kit's instructions and makes it easier to decide which particular form of the machine to build.
It suits builders of Su-17 and Su-22 models in all the usual scales and collectors of literature on Cold War aviation. It is as useful for a build straight from the box as for a conversion with resin or photo-etched accessories, where an accurate reference matters even more. Anyone deciding which version of the Fitter to build at all will appreciate it too.
This is a printed publication. Kits, accessory sets, paints and glue are not part of the delivery, unless stated otherwise.
