About product

Splinter camouflage of the first years of the war

German aircraft of the late 1930s wore the typical splinter camouflage made up of two green tones on the upper surfaces and a light blue underside. It is exactly this combination that the four shades cover. Black-Green RLM 70 belonged on the upper surfaces of the splinter scheme and was at the same time the standard tone of propeller blades, so it turns up on a model in several places at once.

Dark Green RLM 71 formed the second green area of the same scheme and appeared on day fighters during the Battle of Britain as well. Grey RLM 02 served in the same period on the upper surfaces of fighters and above all for mottling, that is for the fine overspray across the basic camouflage. Light Blue RLM 65 was the standard color of the lower surfaces of the early period and from the end of 1939 it climbed up the sides of the fuselage on day fighters too.

The splinter scheme had a precisely set boundary. The two greens met on the upper surfaces in sharply cut fields, while the transition to the light blue underside was high and straight on the early machines. Later fighters had this line lower and complemented by that fine mottling on the sides of the fuselage.

Which range it is

The shades come from the Red Line range, that is water-thinnable acrylics prepared for the airbrush. They are laid on in thin coats over a cured base, and you adjust the consistency with thinner from the same range. The individual ranges of this brand have different binders and cannot be mixed with one another, so watch the designation when buying further shades.

The set holds four bottles. Neither thinner nor a primer is in it.
