Elves and gnomes are among the most frequent figures in tabletop games and collectors' dioramas, and their coloring follows quite different logic from military hardware. It is not about camouflage but about the figure reading clearly at short distance: the flesh has to be warm, the clothing colorful and the accessories distinct. This group of eight is put together for precisely that task and is enough for a complete figure including the base. At the same time the tones chosen are general enough to serve other fantasy subjects as well.
Ivory serves as the highlight and at the same time as a base under bright tones. The sunny flesh shade makes up the basis of the skin, which is followed by burnt red in the role of the deeper shadow and vermilion as a striking accent on clothing or a cloak. Golden brown suits leather, wood and leather straps. Light gray stands in for stone and metal, the medium blue for the more saturated parts of the costume and midnight blue for the darkest nooks, where ordinary black is only rarely suitable.
On figures of tabletop size, contrast decides more than the number of shades. It proves best to lay down the base tone, deepen the shadow with thinned dark paint in the folds and finally pull out the edges with a dry brush. Midnight blue is worth using instead of black everywhere the shadow is meant to stay alive. The paints are thinned with water and dry matte, so a finished figure should be sealed with varnish according to the degree of gloss it is meant to have. It is recommended to finish the base before the figure is seated on it.
