Gunze Hobby Color — gloss acrylic varnish of the Aqueous line

This clear varnish from the Hobby Color Aqueous line is gloss and is built on an acrylic, water-thinnable base. It comes in a bottle of 10 ml. It is not a paint: the varnish is transparent and has no covering power, so it does not change the shade underneath, it only gives it a gloss and seals the surface.

Use

• A gloss clear intermediate coat under decals, so that no silvering forms beneath them.
• Sealing the paint before washes are applied and the engraved panel lines are shaded.
• A final gloss on cowlings, canopies and painted surfaces.
• By brush and by airbrush; for spraying it is thinned with the thinner of the same Aqueous line.
• A protective coat over finished decals, before patina and dust come.

What to watch out for

Gunze runs three incompatible chemistries under similar names: the H line is Aqueous acrylic, the C line is lacquer, and the N and BN lines are Acrysion acrylic with a thinner of their own. Neither the bottles nor the thinners are mixed between the lines, and lacquer thinner does not belong in this varnish. A matte surface is achieved by adding the Flat Base matting additive from the same line, not by overcoating with a varnish from a different line.

Who it is for

For modelers who build aircraft, military vehicles and cars and want a reliable gloss base under decals without a solvent smell. The water-thinnable base gets along well with the acrylic paints it meets in the same coat. When spraying, work in a ventilated space and protect your airways.
