A shade for radome covers in the acrylic Hobby Color line, 10 ml. A light sandy-gray tone, the kind carried by the nose cones of Western-built combat aircraft.
Responsibility details are not available.
The nose of a combat aircraft is usually not made of metal. It houses the radar antenna and must be transparent to the radiated waves, so it is made of fiberglass laminate or a similar non-metallic material. Its coating must not contain metal particles and is typically different from the rest of the airframe — this is exactly where the distinctive light tone comes from, recognizable in photographs by the fact that the aircraft's nose looks like it belongs to a different machine.
The bottle holds ten milliliters. Adjust the consistency for an airbrush by adding water, or thinner from the same brand, which gives the coat better adhesion on a gloss surface. Stir the contents thoroughly before use, or the shade will come out lighter than it actually is.
The nose cone is sprayed separately when the rest of the airframe is masked off, and on the real aircraft the transition between it and the metal part of the fuselage runs along a clear dividing line. That line can be marked on the model with thin masking tape. Since this is a light tone, expect two to three passes before the area covers the darker base underneath. If the cone looks yellowed or faded from service in a period photograph, mix a drop of ocher or brown into the shade, which will more accurately capture the difference between aircraft in the same squadron.
