About product

Gunze Mr.Color — IJN Linoleum Deck Color (10 ml)

A modeling paint from the Mr.Color line by the Japanese manufacturer Gunze (Mr.Hobby), in a 10 ml bottle. It is a paint, not a kit or a model. A key point for correct use: Mr.Color is a solvent-based lacquer (nitro) paint, not a water-thinned acrylic. It thins only with the lacquer thinner of the same brand (Mr.Color Thinner or Leveling Thinner) — never with water. The same manufacturer's water-thinned acrylic line is the separate Aqueous Hobby Color range; the two lines cannot be substituted for each other or mixed. The shade is matte.

What the color represents

IJN Linoleum Deck Color is the shade of the linoleum decks of Japanese warships. Contrary to what a modeler might intuitively expect, Japanese ships did not have most of their decks covered in wood, but in linoleum — a brownish-red to ocher material. The linoleum was fastened to the deck with metal strips, which created characteristic longitudinal bands. These strips are a typical recognition detail of Japanese ships, and modelers commonly highlight them with a brass or gold color.

Use

  • Applies with a brush or an airbrush; for spraying, thin it with the lacquer thinner of the same brand.
  • Apply lacquer paints in thin coats — they are aggressive toward plastic, and a heavy coat can attack the surface or fill in engraved detail.
  • Dries fast to a hard, smooth film that takes masking and weathering well.
  • Stir the bottle thoroughly before use.
  • Best suited to the decks of Imperial Japanese Navy ship models.

Who the paint is for

For ship modelers who build Japanese naval vessels and want an accurate linoleum deck shade. Thanks to its lacquer binder, it will also appeal to modelers used to airbrushing who want a durable base for washes and pigments.

A lacquer paint based on organic solvents: a flammable material. Use it only in a well-ventilated space, and wear a respirator with an organic-vapor filter when spraying. Keep out of reach of children and away from open flame and ignition sources.

FAQ

No. Mr.Color is a solvent-based lacquer (nitro) paint and cannot be thinned with water. It thins with the lacquer thinner of the same brand (Mr.Color Thinner or Leveling Thinner). The same manufacturer offers a water-thinned acrylic in the separate Aqueous Hobby Color line — two different chemistries that cannot be substituted for each other.

Japanese warships had most of their deck areas covered in actual linoleum, not wood. The material was lighter and easier to maintain, and it had a naturally brownish-red to ocher tone, which this paint reproduces.

The linoleum was fastened to the deck with metal strips, which form characteristic longitudinal bands. Once the base brown shade has dried, the strips are usually highlighted with a thin line of brass or gold — a typical and highly visible detail on Japanese ships.

Lacquer paints are more aggressive toward plastic than acrylics. Apply them in thin coats and let each one dry before the next; a heavy wet coat can attack the surface or fill in engraved detail. Always ventilate well while working.
