About product

Vallejo Light Gray 17 ml - a light gray for the airbrush

A light gray matte shade from Vallejo in a dropper bottle of 17 ml. It is a water-thinnable acrylic from the Model Air line, that is, from the line developed specifically for spraying. That is the crucial difference from the thick brush line by the same maker: Model Air paints come from the factory thin enough to be poured into an airbrush straight from the bottle with no thinning. A thick brush paint, on the other hand, would have to be thinned before spraying, or it would clog the airbrush. Depending on need and pressure you can thin Model Air further with airbrush thinner or a flow improver, but it is not compulsory.

Vallejo grinds its pigments finely, so the paint preserves even small engraved details and dries to a matte, durable film. It is thinned and the tools are cleaned with water - you need no nitro or alcohol thinner.

Use

  • The lower (light) surfaces of aircraft and light base coats in general.
  • Preshading and postshading - a light gray brightens the centers of panels and creates depth.
  • Lightening other shades - it is mixed into a darker color instead of white, which would wash the shade out and chalk it up.
  • Gray finishes on naval vessels and models with a light camouflage scheme.
  • A light gray base under thin opaque colors and under light decals.

How it differs from the other Vallejo grays

This paint is the lightest of the group of Vallejo grays. It serves for brightening and as a light base. Do not confuse it with the neutral gray (which is a medium, mixing tone), with the anthracite one (very dark, a substitute for black) or with tank gray (a specific shade of German armor). The light gray has no historical designation - it is a universal light tone.

Who the paint is for

For modelers who spray with an airbrush and want a paint they do not have to experiment with thinning. It suits aircraft modelers, ship builders and anyone who works with shading and grading tones. It is recommended to spray the base with a primer first and to apply the shade in several thin coats.

The paint is water-thinnable and contains no organic solvents, but spraying still creates an aerosol: work in a ventilated area or at a spray booth and protect your airways. Keep out of the reach of children.

FAQ

No. It is the Model Air line, made specifically for the airbrush and thin enough to be poured in straight from the bottle. Depending on pressure and nozzle you can thin it further with airbrush thinner or a flow improver, but it is not necessary. If you reached for the thick brush line by the same maker, thinning there would be compulsory.

Yes, but bear in mind that the paint is deliberately thin, so you will only get coverage after several thin coats. For brush painting over larger areas the thick brush line is a better fit; this paint is optimized for spraying.

It is a water-thinnable acrylic - water, or the airbrush thinner from the same maker, is enough. You need no nitro thinner or alcohol. Clean the airbrush right after work, before the paint dries.

The light gray is the lightest - for light surfaces, a base and lightening. The neutral gray is a medium tone for mixing and shading. The anthracite one is very dark and is used instead of pure black. If you are buying a gray for German armor, you need tank gray instead.
