Stone talus of medium size in a buff tone for debris, rockfalls and stony road edges.

Fragments of medium size are what the eye on a model judges the real size of a scene by. Scattered below a rock outcrop they tell the viewer that he is looking at a face several meters high, while the same face with fine dust at its foot could be read as a stone that fits in the hand. That is exactly why it pays to keep more than one grade in stock and to combine them.
Besides the classic talus below a rock, this material finds a use in a collapsed cutting, at the edge of a road cut through a rock massif, at the mouth of an adit or among the remains of a broken stone wall. In a diorama with military vehicles it becomes the caved-in bank of a ford and the stony ground a vehicle bites into with its tracks. The buff tone reads dry and southern, so it fits Mediterranean and desert scenes.
Never lay the talus down evenly. Real fragments gather in hollows and around obstacles, while few are left on the convex places. Divide the material into several pockets, leave bare terrain between them and only then fix the whole. A few larger pieces placed one at a time with tweezers give the scene the irregularity that scattering alone never has.
Close any unused remainder up; the material is dry and does not spoil. And count on the surface lightening slightly once the glue has dried, so judge the final toning only on the finished area. A dry run of the layout beforehand saves a great deal of correcting.
