A medium grade in a cool gray. A bag of 353 cm3 for granite cuttings, stone footings and industrial terrain.

A cool gray tone is the color of the igneous rock a model meets most often: granite in a railway cutting, a blasted face above a road, the stone footing of a retaining wall. The medium grade holds the happy middle course, because at an ordinary glance you can still make out the shape of a stone, but the surface already behaves as a continuous one and does not fall apart into individual elements.
Of the four grades in the range, Medium tends to be the one a modeler reaches for most often. It handles the transition between fine sand at the foot of a slope and coarse pieces higher up, it fills the gaps between larger stones and on its own it stands up as the surface of a neglected handling area or an old siding.
The loose filling has a volume of 353 cm3. The gray base is rewarding for shading afterwards: a dark wash settles the stones into one another and a dry brush with a lighter tone draws the edges up. Where it is suitable:
A uniformly gray surface is the commonest mistake on stone sections. Real rock has rusty traces of iron, darker streaks where water runs down and light lichen patches on exposed edges. It is enough to apply three extra shades in spots, each on only a small part of the surface, and the material stops looking like dyed ballast from a single sack. On areas in an industrial setting, greasy dark patches are added.
