A shortened caricature model, the kind modelers call an egg plane. The fuselage is squeezed into a bulbous shape with a large canopy, while the wing and the tail surfaces stay recognizable, so you know the type at first glance even though the proportions are deliberately exaggerated. Models like this have no scale and cannot be compared with a display-case build; they are goods in their own right, built on exaggeration.
The MiG-21 was a supersonic fighter with a delta wing and a nose air intake, one of the most widespread fighters of all. It flew in dozens of countries and saw a long run of renderings that differ from each other in the shape of the spine, the canopy and the equipment. The designation UM belongs to the two-seat trainer version, which you recognize by the second seat and the longer glazing.
Egg planes tend to be undemanding to build and are finished in an evening, so they suit a rest between large projects as well as a first build for younger modelers. Both single-seat renderings and the two-seat UM are covered; how many fuselages the package holds and what markings it offers are given in the instructions, so go by them before you start gluing. For painting you will get by with very little, as the areas are small and a heavy coat would show on them.
For modelers who enjoy exaggeration and want to build something in a single evening, for parents looking for a first model for a child, and for collectors of the MiG-21 who would like a lighter take on the type on the shelf as well. Beside a seriously meant kit of the same aircraft an egg plane looks all the better for it.
