Master Tools brass tubes — set no. 4

A set of hollow brass tubes from Master Tools. In this manufacturer's numbered range of brass tubes it is set number 4 — that is, the medium diameters. According to the manufacturer's catalog the set contains four hollow tubes 20 cm long with outside diameters of 1.1 / 1.6 / 2.1 / 2.6 mm, and the tubes fit exactly into one another — a smaller one slides into a larger one. That is very practical: you can build telescopic parts, stepped barrels or solid pins for joints from them. It is not a model and not a kit but a material, a modeling supply.

Use

• Cannon and machine gun barrels — a hollow metal barrel looks incomparably better than a plastic one with a blanked-off muzzle and does not have to be laboriously drilled.
• Exhausts and exhaust stacks on cars, motorcycles, aircraft and military vehicles.
• Struts, braces and beams — brass is stiff, so it holds its shape even under load (biplanes, landing gear, cranes).
• Probes, antennas, masts and pins — as a solid replacement for fragile plastic parts.
• Internal reinforcement of glued joints: drill, slide a tube in, strengthen the joint.

Work tips

Cut the tubes with a fine saw or a tube cutter rather than with side cutters — those squash the end and close it. Then true the mouth with a file and round it slightly. Brass is bonded with super glue (cyanoacrylate), or it can be soldered. Degrease the surface before painting and use a metal primer — without it paint holds poorly on smooth brass. Brass left polished, on the other hand, works as convincing metal in its own right.
