The gloss black of the basic Mr. Color range. It covers reliably and suits both as a base under metallics and on gloss parts. A lacquer paint in a 10 ml pack.

Black tends to be the first bottle a modeler buys and it also tends to be the one that runs out first. This particular one is the gloss member of the trio of blacks. Mr. Color also offers a semi-gloss and a matte version, so you choose according to the finish the part is meant to have, not just according to the color.
Gloss here is not decoration but a tool. Metal and metallic shades are applied over a smooth, sealed base, because every irregularity is amplified in them. A gloss black creates exactly such a base, gives the metal depth and keeps the silver from looking like powder sprinkled onto plastic. This approach has proved itself on exhausts, engine parts, polished panels and on all-metal aircraft.
It also works on its own. On automotive models it covers window frames, grilles and plastic trim, on figures the boots and belts, on ships the funnel bands. Thinned into a very fluid solution it serves as a dark wash for engraved lines and seams, where it brings out the divisions of the surface.
What to watch out for: a pure black area looks hard on a model and swallows detail. Experienced builders therefore lighten it slightly on larger areas with a drop of gray, or bring it out with a dry brush once it has dried. The paint is a lacquer, it is thinned with cellulose thinner of the same brand and it dries quickly. Under a metallic it is also a good idea to lay it down really smoothly, because the metal pigment copies every texture of the base and a rough coat turns glossy metal into a dull gray.
