A semi-gloss black from the Mr. Color lacquer range, a 10 ml bottle. Its degree of sheen between matte and gloss suits landing gear, interiors and a base under metallic tones alike.

Semi-gloss is by far the most used degree of sheen for a black. A completely matte black swallows all shape and a part looks like a silhouette, while full gloss overemphasizes every irregularity. A semi-gloss surface lets edges and pressings read while not shouting, so it suits landing gear legs, wheel rims, instrument panels, canopy frames, antennas, weapons racks and the small fittings of an interior.
Besides being a shade in its own right, this black serves as a base layer under metallics. Metal pigment applied over a dark smooth base comes out deeper and behaves more predictably than over a light one, and the smoothness of a semi-gloss film is exactly what the sparkle of the pigment needs. It serves just as well as an under layer for the preshading of panel lines.
The paint is built on a lacquer solvent binder, is thinned with thinners of the same brand and is intended for an airbrush. According to the thickness it is thinned at ratios from 1:1 to 2:1. The dried film is hard, takes masking well and resists subsequent layers of oil paints or enamel washes, so a whole weathering sequence can be built on it.
Anyone who needs to apply the black with a brush should add roughly a quarter of the volume in retarder of the same brand – that extends the time during which the strokes can still be leveled. The shade can be flattened by mixing in a matte base from the same range, and in the opposite direction a gloss top varnish helps. The pack contains 10 ml.
