A light warm gray matching the gloss shade FS 16440, known as Light Gull Gray. A classic of American naval aviation, a 10 ml bottle.
Responsibility details are not available.
A light gray with a slightly warm cast, designated Light Gull Gray, formed together with white the classic finish of American naval aviation from the 1950s to the 1970s. The leading one in the number 16440 means a gloss finish under the federal standard, and that was no whim: a gloss film stood up better to sea salt and the residues of operating fluids washed off it more easily.
The upper surfaces of the F-4B and F-4J Phantoms, the A-4 Skyhawks, the A-6 Intruders, the A-7 Corsair IIs and the F-8 Crusaders carried exactly this gray over a white underside and white landing gear. The same tone appears on Coast Guard machines and on some transport aircraft. A model in this scheme looks best when the boundary between the gray and the white is sharp, that is made with masking tape rather than sprayed freehand.
A gloss surface is ideal under decals. No air creeps under their edges and no silvery outlines appear to spoil an otherwise well built model. The proven approach is therefore to spray the gloss paint, let it cure, lay the decals down, bring out the panel lines with a wash and only at the end unify the whole surface with a semi-matte or matte varnish. It is thinned with the organic product of the same brand, usually one to one up to two to one, and applied with an airbrush. The bottle holds 10 ml of paint, so there is a reserve even after thinning for the fuselage and wings of a medium machine in 1:48 scale.
