A clean saturated blue

The shade serves as the starting blue in a palette: it is used on its own on prominent features and at the same time as a component when mixing darker and lighter blue tones. It finds use on aerobatic machines, on sports cars, on recognition stripes and on small accessories where the color is meant to draw attention.

Paint properties

In material terms it is a lacquer, which rules out any water-based thinner. Only a product from the same system is suitable for thinning, in an amount depending on the thickness of the batch. The bottle holds 10 ml and the dried film stays smooth and hard, so it will take masking tape and a gloss overcoat.

How to reach full saturation

• Saturated shades cover less well than grays, so lay a white primer under them
• Apply several light coats, because with saturated colors a single wet one runs off the edges
• For a darker tone mix in a drop of black, for a lighter one add white drop by drop
• Stir the paint, because a saturated pigment settles to the bottom faster than in muted shades

Under a gloss overcoat the shade gains further depth. With aerobatic schemes that pays off, because the machines tended to be kept in a glossy state.

With bold colors the rule is that evenness of spraying decides. Imperfect coverage shows up on a saturated blue immediately, while a small deviation in tone will not win any attention.
