A clear gloss varnish from the Mr. Color lacquer line. It serves as an intermediate coat under decals, as a final protection for the shades beneath it and as a binder when mixing your own translucent tones.

The clear member of the whole paint family uses the same binder as the opaque shades, it simply has no pigment. That is exactly why it behaves so predictably: it dries just as fast, thins with the same solvent and does not change the tone of what lies underneath. It is used most often at the moment when a model has been sprayed flat and needs a smooth surface for decals.
The procedure is well established. A thin gloss intermediate coat goes over the color coat, the decals go on top of it, then the washes, and finally a flat or semi-gloss finish. The gloss intermediate coat fills the pores of the flat paint, the decal beds down over its whole area, and no silvery edge is left around the motif, which otherwise comes from air trapped under the carrier film.
The second use is mixing. Adding a small amount of an opaque shade gives a translucent filter that can tone surfaces or suggest the burnt metal of an exhaust. Thinned further, it serves to blend panels that would otherwise not match.
It is sprayed in several light passes. A heavily applied coat tends to orange peel and pools in deep engraving. With a brush it is applied only locally, for instance on the small areas where a decal is going.
A few words on care remain. It pays to wipe the cap after every use, because dried residue on the thread later makes the bottle impossible to close and the contents thicken. If that does happen, adding solvent and stirring patiently brings the material back, rather than shaking, which mixes bubbles into the varnish. It is also true that a clear coat emphasizes everything underneath it, so small flaws have to be fixed before it goes on.
