A saturated mahogany tone for wood, leather and as a base under rust. A lacquer paint in a ten-milliliter package, thinned with the brand's own lacquer thinner.

Mahogany has a dark reddish brown foundation that reads on a model as a natural material at once. It comes into its own on the decks of sailing ships and boats, on the blades of wooden propellers, on the stocks of small arms and on leather-covered seats. Builders of vehicles and military equipment like to use it as the lower layer under rusty areas, because under pigments and earths it creates a warm tone thanks to which corrosion does not look flat and papery.
The solvent in the binder is nitrocellulose, so reach for a lacquer thinner and never for water. The dried surface is smooth, rather satin, and that comes in handy, because an oil wash slides over exactly that kind of base. The drawing of a wood grain arises most easily by drawing a thin oil paint over the dried mahogany and combing it out with a dry flat brush in the direction of the grain.
The shade is very saturated, so on a large area it looks dark; when you want lighter wood, mix it with an ocher or sand color from the same range. Mixing is unrestricted within this series, but not with water-thinnable paints. The work is done with a window open and with the bottle closed between one dip and the next, because the contents thicken quickly and an unclosed liquid remainder evaporates needlessly. Wipe dried remains off the neck with a cloth dampened in thinner before you seat the cap, otherwise the joint will stick so badly that next time you will not open it without damaging the bottle.
