Translucent finishes over a metal ground

Candy shades work differently from ordinary paints. They do not cover, they filter what lies beneath them in color, and that is why they are laid over a silver or chrome ground. Light passes through the colored layer, reflects off the metal and comes back, which creates the characteristic depth that an opaque shade cannot imitate.

The set gathers this group into one package. The tone is governed by the number of passes: the first is delicate, after three the color settles, after seven it tends to be so dark that the metal beneath it is lost. The saturation is therefore set not by mixing but by patience, and that is the biggest difference from working with an ordinary palette.

Where it most often goes wrong

An uneven distribution of the coats is the one fault that no further spraying can save. A dark spot can no longer be lightened, so the model has to go back to bare metal. Work at a steady pace, pass over the whole area and never add paint only to the corner that looks light to you.

The ground has to be perfectly smooth. Every scratch, every fingerprint and every remnant of sanding dust is brought out under a translucent layer instead of being hidden. Before spraying it therefore pays to look the metal over carefully against a sharp light.

Finally a clear protective layer is laid over the finished paint. It protects the color during handling and at the same time evens out the gloss, which tends to differ slightly from place to place after the last pass.

Store the bottles away from heat and let them come up to room temperature before work. Cold paint behaves differently when sprayed from paint that has stood in the workshop overnight, and with translucent finishes the difference shows in the saturation sooner than with opaque shades.
