A self-healing cutting mat the size of an A3 sheet. The surface is made of a material that closes up again after a cut, so no permanent grooves form in the mat and the blade does not get caught in them. The mat also protects the desktop and extends the life of blades, because it is not as hard as glass or laminate.
Do not use the mat as a base under hot tools or under plastic being heated, because the material does not take it well. Run the blade along a metal ruler; a plastic ruler gets shaved away under the knife. Wipe the mat with a damp cloth after work, because glue residues work their way into the surface over time. Store it flat: a mat that has been rolled up or stood on edge remembers the shape and stops lying flat on the desk.
Compared with smaller mats, the A3 format has the advantage that a whole kit sprue fits on it and parts can be cut off without constantly moving things around.
The mat is no substitute for protecting your hands. Work carefully when cutting and always cut away from yourself.
