A set of seat belts for the cockpit of a Douglas SBD Dauntless model in 1:48 scale from HGW. It completes the seats of the pilot and the rear gunner.
Responsibility details are not available.
The Douglas SBD Dauntless was an American carrier-based dive bomber of the Second World War. It became famous in the fighting in the Pacific, where it took part in sinking the Japanese aircraft carriers at Midway. The crew consisted of the pilot and the rear gunner, the cockpit was long and glazed, and it was often open in flight.
On the Dauntless everyone who picks the model up looks into the cockpit, because the glazing is large and modelers usually leave the canopy open. A bare seat with no belts therefore catches the eye at once. Kits in 1:48 scale often only suggest the belts in relief, or do not deal with them at all, and it is exactly that gap a separate set fills. The belts are among the first things the eye finds in a cockpit, because they break up the otherwise uniform surface of the seat.
Fit them while the interior is being built, while the seats are still accessible, that is, before the fuselage is glued and the cockpit glazed. Take hold of them with fine tweezers and lead them so that the loose end falls over the edge of the seat or lies on the cockpit floor. An unnaturally taut belt gives the accessory away at first sight. Clean and degrease the surface of the seat before gluing. The rendering of the belts differs between the individual sets, so check the method of application and gluing in the manufacturer's instructions.
For builders of the Dauntless in 1:48 scale who want an open cockpit taken to the finish. The model, paints and glue are not included in the delivery, unless stated otherwise.
