About product

Curtiss XP-55 Ascender (1st prototype) 1:48 - Modelsvit

An injection-molded plastic kit of the American experimental fighter Curtiss XP-55 Ascender in the form of the first prototype, in 1:48 scale from the manufacturer Modelsvit. The package corresponds precisely to the first prototype - compared with the ordinary version it contains modified parts of the nose, the elevator, the ailerons and the air intake. Besides the plastic sprues, photo-etched parts, painting masks and decals are enclosed. The richly subdivided cockpit allows the canopy to be built either open or closed.

The real subject

The Curtiss XP-55 Ascender was an unconventional American experimental fighter of the Second World War period with a so-called canard configuration - the small horizontal surface was at the front, the main swept wing at the rear and the engine with a pusher propeller was placed behind the pilot. The first prototype flew for the first time in July 1943 and was destroyed during stall testing in the autumn of the same year. The unusual concept remained only at the prototype stage.

Building and painting tips

Separate the parts with a sharp knife and bond them with thin liquid cement for plastic, and the fine photo-etched parts with super glue (cyanoacrylate). Pay attention to the seating of the unusual nose and of the rear engine compartment. Apply a primer before varnishing, spray the camouflage with an airbrush in thin layers and mask the glazing with the enclosed masks. A natural metal surface will come out well with polished metallic paint.

Who the model is for

  • For collectors of experimental and prototype aircraft
  • For modelers with experience of building fighters in 1:48 scale
  • For lovers of unconventional designs with a pusher propeller

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
