The PaK 40 was a German anti-tank gun of 7.5 cm caliber, towed on a wheeled carriage and served from the ground behind a shield. Its wheels are not a small thing hidden under a hull as on a tank but a prominent part of the silhouette: the gun stands on them, they are visible from both sides and from the front they form the whole outline of the weapon together with the shield. A difference in their version therefore shows on a model.
The set renders early stamped wheels, that is the version designated as Vorwerk. It pays to reach for it when you are building a gun from earlier production and want the wheels to match the rest of the turnout; conversely, on a later gun an early wheel is as distracting as a late wheel on an early gun. So before buying, find a photograph of the real subject you are building and compare the shape of the disc.
Cut excess material and traces of manufacture away with a sharp blade a little clear of the part and sand the remainder off. Wash and degrease the parts before painting, choose the glue according to their material and check the exact procedure in the manufacturer's instructions. Keep the axle in one plane, so that the gun stands firmly on both wheels and does not rock. If the part carries a flattening of the tire, turn it toward the ground. Do not paint the tire a saturated black but a dark gray with a veil of dust; a purely black wheel looks flat on a finished model.
