An injection-molded plastic kit of the American C-123 Provider tactical transport aircraft in 1:144 scale from Sova Model (Sova-M), a specialist in less usual subjects and smaller scales. The production is close to short-run technology: interesting subjects, but the parts need more careful preparation and dry fitting. The K/B designation refers to two versions of the real aircraft; which of them can be built out of the box is worth checking against the manufacturer's data for the specific edition.
The Fairchild C-123 Provider was a tactical transport aircraft designed to operate from short and unpaved strips: a high-mounted wing, sturdy landing gear and a rear cargo ramp made it an ideal machine for supplying forward bases. It came into its own in the Vietnam War, where it carried cargo, moved the wounded and flew special missions. The C-123B version was powered by a pair of radial piston engines. The later C-123K additionally received a pair of auxiliary jet engines in pods under the wings; these shortened the takeoff run, raised the useful load and improved the rate of climb. It is precisely these underwing pods that are the most conspicuous external difference between the two versions and they are clearly visible on the model too. The history of the aircraft also includes a dark chapter: C-123s were used within Operation Ranch Hand to spray defoliants, among them the agent known as Agent Orange. The aircraft flew low and slow over the vegetation in order to remove the enemy's cover; the long-term health and environmental consequences of that use are still the subject of expert studies and disputes today.
Glue the plastic with thin cement for polystyrene. It pays to clean up the mold seams and dry fit the main parts first, especially the wing-to-fuselage joint and the engine nacelles. Decide in advance which version you are building, because the auxiliary pods change the look of the machine. In 1:144 thin coats of paint come out best: an airbrush, a capillary panel liner for the lines and decals onto a gloss coat.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
