Flyhawk wooden deck for a model of the Titanic

An accessory for modelers from the Flyhawk brand. It is a deck of thin wood veneer, cut for one specific kit of the liner Titanic in a simplified, so-called egg form. The ship kit is not included in the package. The set is not assembled, only laid onto the finished plastic deck, and even on a simplified model it makes a great difference, because wood has a grain and a color of its own. A lighthearted model thereby gains detail that nobody expects from a simplified kit.

The real subject

In 1912 the Titanic was the largest ship in the world, and her wooden promenade decks were among the things the renowned British ocean liners prided themselves on. The ship sank on her maiden voyage after striking an iceberg, and her story became one of the best known in the history of seafaring. Simplified models with a short, tall hull are a popular lighthearted form of famous ships today.

Use

• strip the engraved detail off the plastic deck and level it flat
• offer the veneer up dry and check that it lines up with the superstructures
• lay it section by section from the center outward and press it down with a flat tool
• once laid, the wood only needs evening out with a matte varnish; painting it is unnecessary
• work the edges around the perimeter with a fine point so that nothing stands proud
• on a simplified hull, check the fit where the curvature is greatest
