S012 Olive Drab (1) — a semi-gloss Gunze Mr.Color lacquer in a spray (40 ml)

The olive green shade Olive Drab (1) from the Mr.Color lacquer range by the Japanese brand Gunze (Mr. Hobby), supplied as an aerosol spray with a volume of 40 ml. It is a solvent-borne lacquer, not an acrylic thinnable with water, with a semi-gloss finish. Olive Drab is one of the most typical American military colors — from the Second World War and after it, it covered American vehicles and equipment (tanks, trucks, gear) and in the aviation version the airframes of aircraft as well. The spray goes straight from the can, so you can lay the olive down even without an airbrush.

Watch out for the version of the shade

The shade Olive Drab (2) is on offer as well — another version of the olive. Before buying, check that it is the number one (1) you need; the shades are easily confused and the difference only shows once sprayed.

Use

• Shake the can thoroughly for several minutes before use.
• Spray in thin coats from a distance of approximately 25 cm — rather more light coats than one heavy one.
• Work in warm, dry conditions; damp and cold spoil the surface.
• As a lacquer it can attack bare plastic — on delicate parts test on a hidden spot first or use a primer.
• Olive is an ideal base under weathering — washes, filters and pigments (dust, mud) settle well on a semi-gloss surface.

Who it is for

For modelers of American military vehicles and aircraft of the Second World War and of the later period who want an even semi-gloss base without an airbrush. Drybrushing, washes, pigments for mud and dust effects and decals follow on from the olive.

A solvent-borne lacquer. It is flammable and smells strongly — work outdoors or in a well-ventilated space, use a respirator and protect yourself from inhaling the vapors. Keep it away from open flame.
