Sepia Shade Wash

Vallejo Sepia Shade Wash, large size

This is a wash, that is a liquid toning paint, not an opaque color: the sepia shade from the wash line of the Spanish brand Vallejo. A wash is a very fluid, transparent acrylic that runs into the recesses once applied and stays there, so it creates shadow and brings out the relief. This is the large size, with a wide neck into which a figure can be dipped whole instead of applying the wash with a brush.

Who it is for

For figure painters and modelers who use washes regularly and for whom the small size is not enough. Watch out for a mix-up: the manufacturer also offers the same sepia shade in a small size with a dropper, and the names barely differ while the volume differs by an order of magnitude. If you are looking for a small bottle for occasional work, this size is too large for you; if, on the other hand, you paint whole companies of figures, this is the one.

Shake the wash thoroughly before use, as the pigment settles to the bottom. It is thinned with water. Ventilate while working, keep out of the reach of children and close the container firmly after use, as evaporation is faster with a wide neck than with a dropper bottle. When dipping a figure, allow for having to shake the excess off or draw it away with a brush, otherwise the wash gathers in the folds into unnaturally dark patches that cannot be lightened again.
