About product

Vallejo Model Color Silver, a silver acrylic metallic (17 ml)

Silver is the classic silver metallic from the Model Color range by Vallejo. It is a water-thinnable acrylic, thinned with water or acrylic thinner, not with nitro or synthetic thinner. Model Color is a thicker range developed for brush application; it can be sprayed with an airbrush, but it has to be thinned first. In that it differs fundamentally from the Model Air range, which can be sprayed straight from the bottle without thinning. The paint comes in a 17 ml dropper bottle. It is not a kit but a modeling paint.

Where Silver belongs, and where it does not

Silver is the brightest and lightest of the commonly used metal trio. While Natural Steel is a grayed clean steel and Oily Steel a dark, blue-leaning oily steel, Silver aims at places where metal is meant to shine: the bare aluminum surfaces of aircraft, wheels and rims, chrome strips, exhausts and bright trim. For greasy machinery and tank tracks it is by contrast too light, and Oily Steel should be used there. It also serves well as a base for mixing: a drop of a darker color turns it into your own shade of weathered metal.

Use

  • Aluminum and bare metal surfaces of aircraft
  • Wheels, rims, chrome strips and trim
  • Exhausts, fittings, buckles and bright details on figures
  • Scuffs and rubbed places (chipping)
  • A base for mixing metal shades

Tips on applying a metallic

Silver contains fine metal flakes that readily settle at the bottom of the bottle, and out of a dropper bottle you will then not get them out at all. Always stir it thoroughly first: shake until you feel the sediment release from the bottom. With silver this is more critical than with other paints, because a badly mixed coat dries to a dull gray. A metallic only comes fully into its own on a smooth, gloss base, so it pays to seal the surface in advance with a gloss clear compatible with acrylic. Count also on the fact that metallics are hard to overspray and masking tape readily pulls them off. Apply them therefore at the end of the painting sequence.

Who the paint is for

For builders of aircraft with a bare metal surface, car modelers and figure painters who need a dependable universal silver. A low-odor acrylic also suits work in an apartment.

When spraying with an airbrush, ensure sufficient ventilation and protect your airways with a respirator. Keep out of the reach of children.

FAQ

Silver is the brightest and lightest and belongs on aluminum surfaces, wheels and chrome trim. Natural Steel is a grayed clean steel (edges, tools, barrels). Oily Steel is dark, toward blue-gray, for greasy machinery and tank tracks.

Almost always because of insufficient stirring, as the metal flakes settle at the bottom of a dropper bottle and mostly binder then comes out of the neck. Shake the bottle really thoroughly. The second reason tends to be a rough matte base: metallics come into their own on a smooth, gloss surface.

No. Model Color is a thicker range intended for the brush and before spraying you have to thin it with water or acrylic thinner. Paints ready to spray straight from the bottle are offered rather by the Model Air range.

It is not recommended. Metallics hold less well and tape easily pulls them off when peeled. Apply them therefore at the end, after the other colors are finished, and mask before rather than after.
