About product

Gunze Mr. Color Spray SJ01 IJN Kure Naval Arsenal

An aerosol paint in a 100 ml can from the Japanese brand Gunze (Mr. Hobby). It is the shade of the Japanese naval gray of the Kure arsenal, the color used on the hulls of Imperial Japanese Navy (IJN) ships built or repaired at the Kure yard. Chemically it is a lacquer delivered as a spray: it forms a firm, thin and even film with no need for an airbrush.

Why the arsenal matters

Each of the Japanese naval arsenals mixed its naval gray a little differently, so the resulting shade varied according to where the ship was built. A ship from Kure therefore had a different tone of gray than a ship from Sasebo. For a faithful model it is essential to choose the shade according to the particular subject; the Kure arsenal was, among other things, the birthplace of the largest Japanese battleships. If you are building a ship from a different yard, reach for the matching shade (Gunze also offers the SJ02 Sasebo version, which is darker overall; the two shades are easily confused, so choose according to your own ship).

Use

  • It sprays straight from the can, which is ideal for the large continuous areas of a hull where an airbrush is slow going.
  • Shake the can thoroughly for a few minutes before spraying and spray in thin coats from a distance.
  • As a lacquer it adheres well and makes a good ground for subsequent washes, decals and a matte varnish.
  • Before the decals we recommend a clear coat compatible with lacquer paints.

Who it is for

  • Builders of Japanese warship models who want a historically accurate hull shade.
  • Modelers working in the large ship scales who cover extensive areas without an airbrush.
  • Anyone concerned with color accuracy according to the particular yard of the subject.

A lacquer: it attacks untreated plastic and dissolves older enamel layers. Apply in a well-ventilated area, use a respirator and protect your skin and eyes. Highly flammable; keep away from sources of fire.

FAQ

It is a lacquer in a spray can. It attacks untreated plastic and dissolves older enamel layers, so spray it in thin coats and in a well-ventilated area with a respirator.

Both are Japanese naval grays, but each arsenal mixed the shade differently. Kure is the lighter one, Sasebo is darker overall. Choose according to where your ship was built.

No. The paint sprays straight from the can, which is practical above all on the large hull areas of ship models.
