About product

Olive Drab and the change to bare metal

From June 1941 to the end of 1943 the US Army Air Forces kept to a single scheme: the upper surfaces in Olive Drab 41, the underside in Neutral Grey 43. Both are in the package, and on top of that Medium Green 42, with which irregular mottles were sprayed from the middle of 1942 along the leading and trailing edges of the wing and the tail surfaces, and often on the sides of the fuselage as well.

From the end of 1943 the shade of the upper surfaces shifted to a darker variant matching the ANA 613 standard and the underside went over to Gunship Grey, that is to ANA 603 Sea Grey. At the same time, though, camouflage began to disappear from most machines altogether, because superiority in the air had been won and a smooth unpainted surface brought a higher speed. The last item, Aluminium, serves exactly such aircraft; what stayed painted were mainly night fighters and transport machines.

Properties and application

The Blue Line acrylics are thinned with water or with the company thinner and are built above all for applying by hand with a brush, so they do not dry too quickly and the strokes have time to join up. With the metallic shade it pays to go onto a smooth gloss base, otherwise the impression of polished bare metal is lost and the surface turns gray.

Six tones cover the whole wartime period from the first olive machines to the late unpainted aircraft.

The difference between the early and the late olive is inconspicuous at first sight, but on a finished model it decides which year the machine belongs to. With the mottling green it is best to apply it on the edge freehand and with a small amount of paint, because the real subject had irregular mottles with a soft edge.

FAQ

The tone of the upper surfaces changed to a darker variant at the end of 1943. Anyone building a machine from the first years of the war reaches for the earlier one, anyone building a late aircraft uses the second.

For the aircraft that camouflage stopped being applied to. From the end of 1943 most machines flew in bare metal, and what stayed painted were mainly night fighters and transport types.

From the middle of 1942 irregular mottles were sprayed with it along the edges of the wing and the tail surfaces, sometimes on the sides of the fuselage as well.

It can once it is thinned, but the formula aims at a brush. For an airbrush the maker has a parallel red range with the same subjects.
