About product

The war over the ocean in one palette

The war in the Pacific caught American naval aviation in the middle of the transition from the silvery machines of the interwar years to camouflaged combat aircraft. Within a few years the regulations changed so often that today you can tell the date of a photograph precisely by the finish. This set follows the whole arc from the first camouflage attempts to the unified appearance of the closing fighting.

A line ready for the airbrush

The paints come from a line intended directly for spraying. Their pigment is ground exceedingly finely and the consistency is set so that they can be poured into the cup straight from the bottle without your having to look for the right ratio with thinner. Anyone who sprays small models or works with a nozzle of small diameter will appreciate that the paint does not clog the passage and lets itself be led in a narrow line.

How the machines differed from one another

Besides the camouflage itself, the national markings and the matte anti-glare panel in front of the cockpit changed over time as well. Carrier aircraft moreover lived in a far harsher environment than land-based ones: salt air, hydraulic fluid and the constant movement of equipment about the deck took more out of them than the fighting itself.

To be added

The shades of the cockpits, the wheel wells and the varnishes are ordered separately; they are not in this package. It pays to think in advance about how you will finish the model as well: naval aircraft tended to be matte, but the worn areas around the walkways gained a slight sheen from boots and from the rags with which the machine was wiped. It is precisely such differences in the reflectivity of the surface that make a finished build convincing more than a shade hit with the greatest accuracy.

FAQ

Mostly not; the consistency is set directly for the airbrush. It pays to thin it further only at low pressure or with a very fine nozzle.

On details yes. On large continuous surfaces the thinner consistency suits less well, because it leaves visible strokes.

With lukewarm water right after the work, and for dried residues with a cleaner intended for acrylics. Letting the paint dry in the nozzle does not pay.

Yes. Marine Corps aircraft followed the same regulations as the carrier machines, so the shades are shared.
