The gray finishes of American aircraft look simple in a photograph, but on a model they tend to be a hard nut to crack. The contrast between the shades is slight, so every overdone step shows at once, and yet a bare gray surface with no work on it looks dead. Solution Box 36 is therefore built as a complete procedure from the base coat to the final traces of service.
A group of products from AMMO of Mig Jimenez that follow on from one another, and a multilingual guide that leads the procedure step by step. It is the guide that matters here: with low-contrast gray schemes, what decides the result is the order of the steps and the degree to which each one is used.
Before you start on the effects, even the surface out with a smooth gloss clear coat. A wash will then run into the engraved lines by itself and the excess wipes off without biting into matte paint. Work sparingly. For the wash into the engraved lines choose a darker gray instead of black, or the model will end up with a drawn outline. Bring the panels to life with slight differences in shade rather than with pronounced patches, and let the individual steps dry between one another. Traces of footfall at the wing root and around the cockpit match the places people really walk, and streaks of exhaust soot should be drawn in the direction of the airflow behind the exhaust. Judge the result from a distance and in daylight, because up close the degree of the effects always ends up overdone.
For modelers of American aircraft in gray camouflage who want the whole procedure in one place and with a guide. The model, glue and an airbrush are not part of it, unless stated otherwise.
