Small light-emitting diodes two millimeters across in a warm white shade. Warm white suits models considerably better than cool white, because it matches incandescent light and does not read on a scene like a modern fluorescent tube. The small diameter means that the diode hides even inside a small lamp, a headlight or the window of a building.
Diodes are not connected straight to a battery without current limiting, or they are quickly destroyed. Always wire them with a suitable resistor for the voltage used. Mind the polarity, because a diode lights only in one direction. Thread the wires through the opening before you close the model up and leave yourself some slack inside, because threading them later may no longer be possible. Do not overheat the diode while gluing it and do not bend the leads close to the body.
Light in a model looks more faithful when its source is not visible. Hide the diode behind a bulkhead or in a cavity and let only the reflected light show through.
Work at a safe low voltage. Solder in a well-ventilated space and keep the material out of the reach of children.
