Hollows instead of a flat surface

A well palette solves a different task from a flat board. A liquid can be poured into a well without running away, so a thin wash is mixed in it, thinner is worked up or a smaller dose of paint is poured out of a bottle. The point of a brush straightens its shape against the wall of a well besides, which is not possible on a flat surface.

How many shades it will manage at once

The main benefit is the organization of the work. The individual wells keep the shades separate, so you can jump between a base tone, its lightening and the shadow with no mixing, and that even in the middle of a part-painted figure. Anyone who paints in coats saves a substantial part of the time by it, because the shade does not have to be put together afresh every time.

How much it will take

Here the answer is simple: the palette has no consumable part. Dried acrylic peels out of the wells or washes out, and thinner will not harm the material if it is not left standing in it for whole days. One piece therefore usually outlives far more models than the brushes that take turns beside it.

A use outside models

The hollows will serve anywhere small doses of liquids are to be kept separate side by side. Painters working in watercolor use them, as do people decorating ceramics, watchmaking and jewelry workshops for small glues and households when coloring decorated Easter eggs. For water-thinnable acrylics this is the most natural use, but the material does not mind alcohol-based cleaners either. The only thing that really harms the wells is scraping them out with a metal tool, after which grooves are left and the paint holds in them.
