A deep red-brown tone of fine hardwood. A single-coat acrylic paint that brings out the growth rings, joints and engraved structure of a plank by itself.

Mahogany is a red-brown timber taken up by the boatbuilding trades, by cabinetmakers and by makers of gunstocks, and the Mahogany shade keeps exactly to its tone. On a model it suits deck planking, keels, barrels, crates, tool handles and the wooden parts of weapons. As it dries the fluid moves into the grooves between planks and into the engraved drawing by itself, so the structure comes out without anyone having to draw it in.
The mistake comes at the moment when the paint seems thick and the hand reaches for the water pot. Water disturbs the ratio of the components that govern how the fluid runs across a surface, and the result shows at once: instead of a smooth drawing into the grooves, rings with a light center and a dark rim are left on the area. If you want to lighten the shade or extend it, what belongs to that is a thinner intended for this line, not the water from the brush-washing jar.
On large wooden areas it pays to work plank by plank and to vary the strength of the application, because an evenly colored deck looks like plastic. Where the wood is meant to be weathered, pass a grayish tone across the drawing once it is dry. The difference between neighboring planks is what gives a whole deck its credibility.
