A dirty brown tone of muddy ground. A single-coat acrylic paint for running gear, boots, wheels and the undersides of vehicles, where soil is meant to settle.

Muddy Ground has the color of a soaked country track: a murky brown with no rusty or ocher pull, turned rather toward gray. It is exactly this tone that stays on fenders, in a wheel arch and on the soles of boots. Because the paint runs off into the hollows as it dries, it gathers by itself in the grooves of a tread pattern, between track links and in the corners of running gear, that is where real mud would settle.
Anyone who takes on a whole side of a vehicle at once will reach a place where the first stroke has already dried, and the join will stay visible as a sharp boundary across the area. The snag begins at the moment one chooses too large a section. Divide the area according to the real edges, seams and lines of rivets, work always from edge to edge only, and keep the wet front of the stroke moving. Nobody will find a join on an edge; a join in the middle of a door they will.
The effect is stronger if you let the shade rise from the ground upward and fade it away to nothing at the top. A sharp horizontal boundary of mud looks unnatural, whereas gradual weakening matches the way dirt builds up. Most of it belongs in the space behind the wheels, where the tread throws it, and in the gaps between the hull and the frame, from where nobody would ever wash it out. A dry area will take further glazes and powders.
