Xpress Mummy White Acrylic

The Mummy White shade

Mummy White is a pale whitish tone from the Xpress Color acrylic line by Vallejo. It is not a pure cool white but a damped white, the kind that suits bandages, faded cloth, bone and canvas. It is exactly on these surfaces that depth is decisive: a white without shadow merges into one patch and the fine relief on a figure disappears.

How the Xpress Color line works

The paint is deliberately thin. Once applied it does not lie evenly but is led to where the surface is lowest: into the fold of a bandage, into a crease of cloth and under the edge of a plate. There it darkens, whereas the raised places hold only a thin film and stay light. The base tone and the shadow thus arise from one coat. The covering is only partial, so on a dark ground the shade loses its brightness.

Application tips

• It is applied with a brush straight from the container and does not have to be thinned.
• Stir the contents of the container before work, as the pigment settles at the bottom.
• With a pale shade choose a white ground, as it shows through over a gray one.
• Lead the brush smoothly and without going back, or the shadow just formed will smear.
• Draw a puddle left in a deep crease off with a dry brush while the paint is wet.
• The raised places can still be lifted once dry with a thin coat of opaque white, on the edges and highest surfaces only.

A container of paint as described is supplied. A figure, brushes, a ground and thinner are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise. For thinning, cleaning the tools and storage, follow the manufacturer's instructions on the packaging.
