About product

Vallejo Model Air Yellow RLM 04, 17 ml

RLM 04 Gelb is the yellow from the color standard of the Luftwaffe — the manufacturer lists it directly under that designation. It is not a camouflage color: it is a tactical identification yellow with which conspicuous parts of the airframe were marked in the Second World War so that machines could be recognized quickly in the air and from the ground. Vallejo offers it in the Model Air range, that is, in a water-thinnable matte acrylic mixed directly for the airbrush, which in most cases is sprayed straight from the dropper bottle. The package contains one 17 ml bottle. It is a modeling paint, not a kit.

Use

  • The tips of engine cowlings and propeller spinners — the most typical use of this yellow.
  • The undersides of noses and the lower surfaces of the engine section of the fuselage.
  • Identification bands around the rear fuselage, typical above all of the Eastern Front.
  • Wingtips and leading edges and other supplementary recognition markings.
  • Machines used in the Mediterranean and in North Africa, where yellow markings appeared often.

Coverage and application technique

A saturated yellow is the worst covering color in the whole palette — over a dark or varied surface it practically will not come through. The procedure is therefore always the same: spray the area white first or in a very light gray, let it dry and only then the yellow, and that in several really thin coats. Trying to cover the area in one go ends in runs and flooded panel lines. The tips of engine cowlings are sprayed first, masked once they have dried, and only then does the camouflage go over them. Shake the bottle thoroughly before spraying.

Who the paint is for

For builders of German aircraft of the Second World War — no machine with the characteristic yellow nose can do without RLM 04. The shade will be appreciated above all by those who build the Eastern Front or the Mediterranean, but it also serves as a saturated signal yellow on any other subject.

Ensure sufficient ventilation and protect your airways when spraying. Keep out of the reach of children.

FAQ

RLM is the abbreviation of the Reich Aviation Ministry (Reichsluftfahrtministerium); the color standard comes from it and dates from the Second World War, and the number 04 in it corresponds to yellow. The manufacturer lists the shade directly under that designation. It was not a camouflage color but tactical identification marking — yellow cowling tips, bands around the fuselage or wingtips.

A saturated yellow is the worst covering color there is. On a dark or varied surface it will never light up. Spray a white base under it, let it dry and then apply the yellow in several really thin coats — otherwise it runs and floods the engraving.

The yellow first, over a white base; mask it once it has dried and only then spray the camouflage scheme. The opposite order means the yellow has to cover over dark camouflage, which practically never works.

No. This is a modeling paint on its own in a dropper bottle holding 17 ml. Neither a model nor any other accessories are included in the package.
