About product

The Republic XP-72 with contra-rotating propellers, 1:48 scale

A kit of the American experimental fighter Republic XP-72 in the version with coaxial contra-rotating propellers, that is as the second of the prototypes built looked. A pair of propellers turning against each other on a common axis was the answer to a problem that arose with machines with such a powerful engine: one propeller could no longer turn the power into thrust and at the same time it produced an enormous torque reaction. A contra-rotating arrangement cancels that out. On the model it is also the most conspicuous difference from the first variant, which the manufacturer offers separately.

The real subject

The XP-72 came about as the peak of performance of the development line the Thunderbolt also comes from. It was powered by an air-cooled four-row twenty-eight-cylinder radial engine, one of the largest piston aero engines ever built in series. The second prototype was completed in June 1944 and flew with contra-rotating propellers. The machine had exceptional rate of climb and speed, but jet engines had arrived in the meantime and the program came to an end.

Building and painting tips

Finish and paint the cockpit and the landing gear bays before you close the fuselage. Try the propeller assembly dry and sort the order of the blades out in advance, because once it has set there is no putting it right. A bare metal surface calls for a perfectly smooth base, because every scratch is emphasized under a metal paint. Divide the panels with masking and alternate the shades of metal.

Who the model is for

  • For modelers of experimental and unadopted types.
  • For collectors of American piston fighters of the end of the war.
  • For those who build both variants side by side.

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

A pair of propellers turning against each other on a common axis turns more power into thrust and at the same time cancels the torque reaction, which with such a powerful engine would be hard to handle.

In the propeller assembly and in which prototype it represents. This set matches the second machine; the first had a single four-blade propeller.

It did not. It stayed at the testing stage, because jet engines had arrived in the meantime.
